Fayetteville

The Holliday Dorsey Fife House in Fayetteville was originally owned by John's uncle, Dr. John Stiles Holliday.  It stands on West Lanier Avenue and John would have spent much time visiting with his cousin, Robert.

For its first couple of years, the house, constructed in 1855 under the supervision of Dr. Holliday, was loaned to the Fayetteville Academy for use as faculty headquarters and a student dormitory.  This school was referred to as 'The Fayetteville Female Academy' by Margaret Mitchell in her book, 'Gone with the Wind' and was attended by Scarlet O'Hara.  In reality, it numbered amongst its graduates, Anne Elizabeth Fitzgerald, Ms Mitchell's Grandmother.

he central hallway of the house, showing window lights over what was originally the back door.  Dr. Holliday had the house built with wide hallways and large rooms which had high ceilings and walk in closets.

A personal touch can be seen at the bottom of the balustrade, where Dr. Holliday had mounted a carved wooden mortar, being indicative of his medical profession

n the Fayetteville Cemetery, the link to John Henry Holliday is through his Uncle, Robert Kennedy Holliday.  Robert was married to Martha Anne Fitzgerald and both are buried here.

Other graves include those of James Fitzgerald and his wife Anne O'Carew.  These two were both born in Ireland in 1791 and died 1835 and 1853, respectively.

They are now buried in the  Fitzgerald plot
